Pianist Maurice "Mo" Egeston spends his musical time leading bands and writing music while also working as a collaborative pianist and educator in both the classroom and private studio. With Mo E (Egeston) All-Stars, he creates a unique groove driven sound and vibe with his originals, reworks and arrangements. It’s a sound that blends influences of jazz, soul, Latin, funk, r&b and electronic music, hallmarks of his style since his days with the pioneering live house/electronic project Urban Jazz Naturals.

For the Celebrate the Groove shows, Mo expands the band’s sound by collaborating with like-minded vocalists and songwriters from the region including frequent collaborator and 2023 Artist Support Grant recipient AhSa-Ti Nu and powerhouse vocalist Nikki Ellis

A multi-disciplinary artist with work rooted in poetry, storytelling, sound engineering and activism, AhSa-Ti Nu utilizes her voice as a means of expressing soulful words in a contemporary context. AhSa-Ti Nu’s influences of gospel, jazz, rhythm and blues and rock continue to shape her goal as an artist: to create music that everyone can connect to emotionally and spiritually.

Hailing from Chattanooga, Tennessee Nikki’s powerful soul and jazz influenced vocals first caught Mo’s attention through their work together at St. John’s UCC- The Beloved Community. Along with drummer Andrew Gibson (and occasionally percussionist Duane Williams), Nikki and Mo are a part of the St. John’s Music Ministry so their musical bonds are already well developed. Laz Jazz Fest

The Grandel, 3610 Grandel

Since 2016, Brothers Lazaroff has bent their catalog of original music once a year into a sub-genre that has become known as “Laz Jazz”. This year the brothers are taking that concept further, bringing friends from the St. Louis music scene for the inaugural "Laz Jazz Fest,” to be held at the Grandel Theater and Dark Room on Saturday, July 15th.

Proceeds benefit St. Louis Art Place Initiative’s mission to build wealth and equity for low to moderate-income artists through homeownership. The next round of artist home applications launches at Laz Jazz Fest! Learn more at stlartplace.org.

For the inaugural Laz Jazz Fest, Brothers Lazaroff called upon their extended musical family and some St. Louis musical artists they have long admired to fill out the festival lineup. Serving as special guest MC's and performers are long-time collaborators Elizabeth McQueen, who DJ's at KUTX in Austin, TX and Thelonius Kryptonite, who relocated from St. Louis to New Orleans and now hosts a radio show at the storied WWOZ. McQueen, a grammy-nominated vocalist from Austin TX, toured with the legendary band Asleep at the Wheel for a decade.

Laz Jazz Fest will take place on the inside stages of The Grandel Theater and The Dark Room with acts Blvck Spvde and The Cosmos, Anita Jackson, David Gomez, Mo Egeston All-Stars, KBA (Kaleb Kirby, Bob DeBoo, Adam Maness), Joey Ferber, DJ Nune, DJ Boogieman, and DJ Black Sun playing high energy sets in both rooms.

On the outside patio of the Grandel The Heal Center for the Arts Jazz Camp will host a youth stage, with performers ranging in elementary school age through high school.

Laz Jazz Fest food will be available, and more partnering organziations to be annouced.

The event is presented by PK Construction with support from Kranzberg Arts Foundation and Music at the Intersection.
